College Football Picks, Week 5

An average 6-4 record last week brings the season record to 30-10. Losers last week were Auburn, North Carolina, Notre Dame, and Oregon. Hopefully this week will be a return to earlier form (18-2 first two weeks, 12-8 last two weeks)

Game of the Week - Georgia vs Alabama
Alabama has arrived at this point a year early, driven by the play on its lines. Georgia has not looked as impressive as expected, but they have won all of their games and have only been in danger once. The Tide are going to control this game along the lines, but, much like last season's blackout game against Auburn, Georgia will take control in the middle of the 3rd quarter and pull away for the victory. Georgia 31, Alabama 20

Penn St. vs Illinois
Illinois doesn't seem ready for this yet. The program has never won at Penn St., and this years Penn St. team is a whole lot better than the one Illinois upset last season. The Illini will score, but it won't be enough, much like the Missouri game. Penn St. 42, Illinois 31

Oklahoma vs TCU
TCU is a lot better than people think and a win here would put not only themselves, but the top of their conference in the national championship chase. Too bad they aren't going to get the win here. Oklahoma has been great so far and Bob Stoops will leave his starters in to run the score up just because TCU beat him the last time they played. If not for that, the score would look more like 28-14. Oklahoma 42, TCU 14

Nebraska vs Virginia Tech
I am not impressed by Virginia Tech at all. Nebraska is untested. If Virginia Tech was impressive on offense, they would win, but they aren't so they won't be able to take advantage of Nebraska's weakness. Nebraska wins at home. Nebraska 24, Virginia Tech 20

Miami vs North Carolina
North Carolina seemed on their way to a win over Virginia Tech last week before quarterback T.J. Yates went down injured. Too bad he's out. The Tar Heel offense isn't going to move the ball on Miami without him. Miami 27, North Carolina 14

Florida St. vs Colorado
The Florida St. offense looked awful last week against Wake Forest. Now they get to play against a better defense. They better hope the return of their suspended players makes a difference. Also, why isn't Drew Weatherford get a shot at quarterback. He may not move the ball, but he doesn't throw interceptions (only three all of last season). He won't get in and Colorado will win in another rash of Florida St. turnovers. Colorado 20, Florida St. 10

Michigan vs Wisconsin
The Wisconsin offense wasn't impressive in its one big game so far scoring just 13 points in the win over Fresno St. On the other side, Michigan stinks in pretty much all areas. The offense is terrible, the special teams can't catch a kickoff, and the defense gave up 35 points to Notre Dame and the pea shooter offense that can't run. Wisconsin won't need the offense quite yet. Wisconsin 24, Michigan 7

Ohio St. vs Minnesota
Ohio St. is going to look like a different team. Pryor gets his second start and finally has Beanie Wells in the backfield. Minnesota, while improved, won't know what hit them, especially as a young team in its first road game. Ohio St. 40, Minnesota 14

Auburn vs Tennessee
Tennessee will play its best game of the year in this game, but it still won't be enough. There is a definite talent problem with the Vols. The running game fumbles on a regular basis, the defense can't get a stop when it needs it, and the special teams have been awful. Because of all that, the best Tennessee performance of the season still won't be enough against an angry bunch of Tigers with no big game to look forward to for awhile (unless you count next week's game at Vanderbilt). Auburn 24, Tennessee 20

Texas vs Arkansas
Hide the women and children! Avert your eyes! Block this game on your tv receiver! Last week, Arkansas was exposed and this game only remains on this list because it was supposed to be here before the hurrican postponement two weeks ago. Texas can call its shot in this game. It won't be a test, it will be a bloodletting. Texas however many it wants to score, Arkansas 10
