College Football Viewer's Guide Championship Saturday

Games ranked on a scale of what you must do to watch it

0* - Truly insufferable games that will be blowouts. The only way you do watch is if you go to the game in person (even this can be a stretch) or if something is going horribly awfully wrong for the favored team (think Michigan against Appalachian St.).

1* - Games that really shouldn't be televised. Likely some sort of grizzly blowout or a low quality game that is only on basically because it can be. Hard even for people like me to stomach for the entire game.

2* - Casual fans should only watch if its their team or they are watching with hardcore fans. Hardcore fans, you know you will watch, but if other plans get in the way then so be it.

3* - A solid matchup that has the potential to have an impact. The hardcore college football fan will watch no matter and the casual fan will find quite a bit of enjoyment out of this game.

4* - Well worth building a day around and if you are a fan of a specific team these can trump a five-star game. Most weeks have at least one of these if not two or three, sometimes more depending on the circumstances.

5* - Everything possible. If this means watching on your phone at a wedding, you do it. If this means working all night on either a work or school project on Friday and/or Saturday, you do it. There aren't too many of these in any given year. Last season included all of four regular season games that fit (Boise St.-Virginia Tech, Oregon-Stanford, Auburn-LSU, Auburn-Alabama). As a note, rivalry games on rivalry week get an extra start unless that star would promote the game the game 5*. Games must earn 5* on their own. Be sure to check the game days in addition to the times as there are a lot of Friday games over Thanksgiving. Also, with so many games on over the weekend, many announcers will pull double duty, working games on both Friday and Saturday.

2* - Casual fans should only watch if its their team or they are watching with hardcore fans. Hardcore fans, you know you will watch, but if other plans get in the way then so be it.

3* - A solid matchup that has the potential to have an impact. The hardcore college football fan will watch no matter and the casual fan will find quite a bit of enjoyment out of this game.

4* - Well worth building a day around and if you are a fan of a specific team these can trump a five-star game. Most weeks have at least one of these if not two or three, sometimes more depending on the circumstances.

5* - Everything possible. If this means watching on your phone at a wedding, you do it. If this means working all night on either a work or school project on Friday and/or Saturday, you do it. College Football Viewer's Guide Week 1

Games ranked on a scale of what you must do to watch it

1* - Games that really shouldn't be televised. Likely some sort of grizzly blowout or a low quality game that is only on basically because it can be. Hard even for people like me to stomach for the entire game.

College Football Viewer's Guide – Week 11

A thin slate overall and depending on what region of the country you live in (sorry Big 12 folks), it is worse for you than the rest of us. Of course it's days like this that often turn out to be the big shake up days with upsets all over the place.

Iowa tries to stay in the hunt for the Big Ten title and set up a huge game with Ohio St. next week, Missouri and Kansas St. battle in one of the few games between ranked opponents (blame the BCS computers, nobody actually has Kansas St. ranked at this point unless they still somehow believe Texas is good) and Michigan gets ready for its every week shootout where whoever has the ball last wins (unless it goes to overtime in which case whoever makes a lucky stop wins).

The headliner game is the Auburn-Georgia where Cam Newton tries to overcome the eligibility fiasco distraction and lead Auburn to another win. In other action, Ohio St. takes on JoePa in the Gameday game (proof the schedule isn't really great this week) while trying to remain relevant in this season's Big Ten race while Virginia Tech hopes to continue marching right through the overmatched ACC. Also, tune into the first part of TCU most likely scorching the Earth again as they leave a skid mark of San Diego St. on the field in Fort Worth.

Unless you are a Big Ten fan (no night games in November by conference rule), there is something for everyone here and while people like me will watch all the games, this is really the only on worth going out of the way to watch. Most important in the de facto SEC semifinal between Florida and South Carolina in the Swamp. If that game goes blowout (a distinct possibility), there is Alabama-Mississippi St. going on at the same time. For the rest of the world, the ABC regional games are out there as in top ranked Oregon playing what could be (but isn't likely to be) a close game at Jekyll and Hyde Cal.

Late Night Game – 7 PM PT Kickoff or Later

Fresno St. vs Nevada – ESPN

For those interested in the WAC or in the bigger challenger to Boise St., this game is for you. Expect lots of points while watching this too.

Meanwhile, Michigan and Illinois both feature coaches on varying degrees of the hotseat and Maryland is an underdog to Miami despite controlling its own destiny in the ACC Atlantic. Also, Clemson and NC State should be an entertaining scrap with the both teams still in the ACC Title Race (Clemson much more on the periphery).

For the most part this is the reality in the ABC Saturday Night Football era. There just isn't much in this time slot with the extra night games.

Since it is obvious what the two best games are and what every non-SEC fan should be watching, please allow me to rant for a second. Why are the two ABC games split with the rest getting the game on ESPN. While this is normally noble and I normally support it, with only two games it causes a big problem. Notably, it means that much of the country including my current location of Las Vegas will not have access to the Michigan St./Iowa game in HD. This is ridiculous. With only two games, just televise one nationally on ABC and the other on ESPN and make everyone happy.

Obviously Auburn is appointment viewing for me and with Cam Newton, any Auburn game is worth a look. Check in after the afternoon games are done but before turning attention completely to the primetime games and stick with this one if it is close (a distinct possibility).

The rest of the country has sympathy for you.

The Northwestern/Michigan St. game has some legit intrigue as Northwestern ended Iowa's perfect season on the road last season and Michigan St. has some history of gacks in games like this. Also, there is a possibility of other games being close in this segment, notably offenseless West Virginia against Syracuse and the Navy/Notre Dame tilt.

Only one game and it should be good, especially with Matt Scott in for injured Arizona quarterback Nick Foles. It probably won't be the high scoring shootout people expect from their late night west coast games, but it will still be close.

That game game would likely be the top game if it was at Illinois, but the homefield advantage for Michigan St. bumps it down. Most of the rest could be entertaining. This is a good day to be on ESPNews for the look ins on all the ESPN and ESPN Gameplan games.

Out of that, Auburn/Arkansas has wild shootout potential and a pair of Heisman candidate in Cam Newton and Ryan Mallett, Nebraska/Texas is the one and only chance anyone will likely ever see when the respectful Nebraska fans act like SEC style jackasses and Michigan/Iowa has Denard Robinson and the Michigan defense made of air which are both very entertaining. Texas Tech and Oklahoma St. will also play a crazy shootout, likely of a different variety than Auburn/Arkansas. Special note at the stupidity that is the NBC contract. Western Michigan is on national TV Really. This is idiotic.

Welcome to the worst prime time window of the entire season. And its like this every year (thanks NASCAR on ABC). Here is my solution to this problem: Rework the SEC schedule and tell CBS they are doing their doubleheader with the prime time game on whatever week happens to be the ABC Prime time NASCAR race. Whatever the biggest movable game you can find on the schedule is needs to be on this week along with one other that can still draw that kind of audience. I suggest something involving either Alabama or Florida against one of the other major teams in the conference and Auburn/LSU that is always entertaining always be on this weekend whenever it falls. Back to the games. Go out, do something else. Don't watch football. If you must, stay on the Wisconsin/Ohio St. game until the Buckeyes blow them out (yes Wisconsin is bad) and then flip to Florida/Mississippi St. Nothing else in this time slot is worth watching and unless you have the Gameplan package, nothing in the next time slot will be worth the time either.

Couldn't we have gotten a favor and gotten the immortally bad New Mexico/New Mexico St. game in this time slot last week. That would have been interesting. Anything else involving the Aggies is awful. Or even better, couldn't we have gotten the game coming from the islands involving the top 25 team. Ridiculous in the WAC. For those who don't have Gameplan, the Washington/Oregon St. game will likely have some entertainment value as Washington is normally much better at home (except the Nebraska debacle) and Oregon St. generally plays interesting games.

It's Friday, time for the guide of games to watch this week, ranked in order of importance in each time slot.

The Georgia-Tennessee should be a close bad ame between a couple of deficient teams as should South Florida-Syracuse and Penn St.-Illinois. The rest in this timeslot have mega blowout potential. For those on the West Coast, sleep in and then tune in around 11:30 and see if any of these games are close, if you even have access to any of them.

While the most important of the games, viewer beware of the Florida-LSU game. The winner isn't likely to reach 20 points and there are probably going to be a whole lot of punts. Other than that, the primetime segment is fairly weak making up for a lack of marquee matchups with sheer volume of games. Somewhere in this mess, a good game or two will break out. Nobody has the slightest idea which one though. One highlight (or lowlight as it might be) is the toilet bowl game between the New Mexico schools. They are so bad, I have no doubt they could play a 0-0 tie if given the opportunity. Instead, they will probably go to overtime battling in the futility bowl.

If you've got the Washington-Arizona St. game, it should be an entertaining if inconsequetial game. The other is just going to be a grizzly beating.
