Games ranked on a scale of what you must do to watch it
0* - Truly insufferable games that will be blowouts. The only way you do watch is if you go to the game in person (even this can be a stretch) or if something is going horribly awfully wrong for the favored team (think Michigan against Appalachian St.).
1* - Games that really shouldn't be televised. Likely some sort of grizzly blowout or a low quality game that is only on basically because it can be. Hard even for people like me to stomach for the entire game.
2* - Casual fans should only watch if its their team or they are watching with hardcore fans. Hardcore fans, you know you will watch, but if other plans get in the way then so be it.
3* - A solid matchup that has the potential to have an impact. The hardcore college football fan will watch no matter and the casual fan will find quite a bit of enjoyment out of this game.
4* - Well worth building a day around and if you are a fan of a specific team these can trump a five-star game. Most weeks have at least one of these if not two or three, sometimes more depending on the circumstances.
5* - Everything possible. If this means watching on your phone at a wedding, you do it. If this means working all night on either a work or school project on Friday and/or Saturday, you do it. There aren't too many of these in any given year. Last season included all of four regular season games that fit (Boise St.-Virginia Tech, Oregon-Stanford, Auburn-LSU, Auburn-Alabama). These are rare indeed.
All games are Saturday unless otherwise noted and times are PACIFIC TIME
5* Games
Oklahoma St. vs Oklahoma. ABC 5PM; Brad Nessler, Todd Blackledge (This is my favorite of ESPN's crews, but I wonder why they are on this game instead of Herbstreit and Musberger)
4* Games
SEC Championship – LSU vs Georgia (game played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta). CBS 1PM; Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson
B1G Championship – Wisconsin vs Michigan St. (game played at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis). FOX 5PM; Gus Johnson, Charles Davis
ACC Championship – Virginia Tech vs Clemson (game played at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte). ESPN 5PM; Brent Musberger, Krik Herbstreit
Baylor vs Texas. ABC 12:30PT; Sean McDonough, Matt Millen
3* Games
MAC Championship – Ohio vs Northern Illinois (game played at Ford Field in Detroit). ESPN2 4PM Friday; Joe Tessitore, Rod Gilmore
Conference USA Championship – Houston vs Southern Miss. ABC 9AM; Mike Patrick, Craig James (James penalty still in effect, please let the rumors of a political run taking him away from college football be true)
Kansas St. vs Iowa St. FSN 9:30AM; Joel Meyers, Brian Baldinger
2* Games
Cincinnati vs Connecticut. ESPN 9AM; Dave Pasch, Chris Spielman
Hawaii vs BYU. ESPN2 4:30PM; Carter Blackburn, Brock Huard (consider this as a 2* game punishment for not being in Hawaii's customary late night time slot for this game, it would be 3* in the late slot, at least on this Saturday).
1* Games
Pac-12 Championship – Oregon vs USC... oops I mean UCLA. Oregon vs USC would be up in the 4* category but Reggie Bush had to be a moron. FOX 5PM Friday; Gus Johnson, Charles Davis
Pittsburgh vs Syracuse. ESPN2 9AM; Dave Lamont, Mike Belotti
TCU vs UNLV. Versus 11:30AM; Paul Burmeister, Shaun King
San Diego St. vs Fresno St. CBS Sports 5PM; James Bates, Aaron Taylor
0* Games
none and I think this can be retired until FCS teams start rearing their ugly heads on the tv schedule next September.
