Off-field Issues Championship Week Part 2 – Cam Newton is Eligible

Cam Newton was ruled ineligible and then reinstated by the NCAA quietly this week. What does it mean going forward?

Unscrupulous parents are going to be shopping their kids around – If there is no risk of missing games as long no money is taken, there is no consequence for parents at least asking for money. If schools turn them down so be it. If one pays, at long as there are no records of the transaction everything is free and clear. This opens a very large can of worms for the NCAA to deal with.

How is this different from Reggie Bush – On the message and comment boards around the internet, people have been saying why didn't Auburn and Cam get the Reggie Bush treatment? Simple, there is no trail of money like there was with Bush and with Newton there was no institutional stonewalling like there was at USC. In addition, there is no proof Cam did anything wrong whereas Yahoo found a paper trail that helped the NCAA eventually find everything needed in the Reggie Bush case.

Is this truly done? - The Infractions committee is still investigating. While it appears all wins are safe for Auburn, there is the possibility of recruiting violations at both Mississippi St. and Auburn that, while likely secondary in nature, could bring some minor sanctions with them. Also, while it appears that there will be nothing greater coming out of this for the Newton and Auburn, the committee could still find something that changes the current ruling though it is unlikely.
