10. Weekly New Mexico fail report – Wait a second. You mean the Lobos actually won a game. What am I going to do with this weekly segment of the Lowlights? I know New Mexico is still likely to show up here but now I have a big problem. As for Wyoming, you lost to New Mexico? How bad could you possibly be. I don't care where the game was played. Not even UNLV or New Mexico St. managed to lose to New Mexico. Now back to what to do with this segment of the post each week...
9. ...Now the weekly Akron fail report (expect to se it in its proper number 10 slot next week) – Akron is still winless after losing in overtime to Ball St. Considering the Zips managed to lose earlier this season to bad FCS opponent Gardner-Webb and just lost to Ball St. (who handed Eastern Michigan its only win of the season and FCS Liberty), its safe to say there will not need to be any changes on this line for the rest of the season.
8. South Carolina effort – I know the game was meaningless to the SEC Title hopes after Florida won. That said, this performance was embarrassing, even by South Carolina late-season collapse standards. With the exception of games against Florida, the collapses of the past have generally been about not having enough talent or making a key mistake in close games. I have real doubts now as you must win in the Swamp or the season is yet another failure. Good luck. You will need it Gamecocks.
7. The carcass of the Big East – Syracuse lost to Louisville. Now we have a scenario where nobody is going to finish with less than three losses overall. I hope this league continues to beat on each other to the point that we get a big tie at 5-2 or 4-3 with everyone carrying a couple of other losses. The train wreck in the BCS will be enjoying to watch.
6. Defense in general – Michigan 67, Illinois 65. Kansas 52, Colorado 45. East Carolina 73, Navy 36. Countless others all over college football. Where did the defenses go this week. It seems nobody other than Boise St., TCU and Texas A&M decided to play on that side of the ball at all. It was heinously bad.
5. Utah – 47-7 at home. I didn't think it was possible that this team would get killed even worse this season than it did last season in Fort Worth. 47-7 says this team really did fatten up on cupcakes all season long because I refuse to believe TCU (or anyone for that matter) could do that on both sides of the ball to a legit top 5 team at this point in the season (TCU really might be the best team, but not by the margin it would seem if Utah really were a top 5 team).
4. UNLV effort – The numbers are painful. 55-7 with only 144 yards of offense (70 of that on the final drive to score in garbage time with under a minute to go) and giving up over 500 yards of offense to previously inept BYU. It was ugly in every sense of the word for the Rebels who played one of the single worst games of the entire season by anybody.
3. ACC Atlantic – Does anybody want to win this division? NC State and Maryland both controlled their own destiny entering the day. Both lost and exited in control as well because of Florida St.'s loss. Meanwhile, Clemson's win over NC State put the Tigers back in the race, somehow. No matter which one of these teams survives this, Virginia Tech is going to throttle them in Charlotte.
2. Alabama offensive line – Time after time in the loss to LSU, the Alabama running game couldn't get going. Considering how good the running backs are, that puts the blame on the offensive line. People have complained that Alabama has abandoned what they do best in leaving behind the running game this season. People obviously haven't been watching. The offensive line can't open the holes the way they have the last two seasons. Even in the win over Florida, the line didn't do a great job which is why Florida still ended up close to Alabama in yardage in a game they were steamrolled in.
1. Longhorn football – Kansas St. is a good football team. They are 6-3. The way Texas has played, them losing on the road to Kansas St. should have surprised nobody. That said, 39-0 at one point. No hope. Texas is terrible. Other than the Nebraska and Oklahoma games, this team has looked like they didn't practice. I think this young team read the press clippings a little too much and didn't put in the necessary work in the offseason. They better this season or what is shaping up to be one of the nations best recruiting classes coming in next season will be playing huge roles a lot earlier than expected.
