Off-field Issues - Week 7

A weekly look at things in the college football world making news off the field that affects what is happening on the field.

What on Earth was the Mountain West thinking?

A BYU employee in the replay booth for a BYU game at BYU and then a blown call upheld by replay that allowed BYU to score what ultimately became the winning touchdown. Whether the guy did anything or not to aid the Cougars, it just looks bad. The league should have known better.

Death to the BCS
The new book from a group of writers led by Yahoo Sports reporter Dan Wetzel seems like nothing more than a hit piece on the BCS. An excerpt found here was more inflammatory criticism towards the organization and while most of it is warranted, I still wonder if it will do anything to change matters. As for me, the only playoff that is a started is of the 16-team variety letting all of the conference champions in. Without that, we have the same kind of morass we have now with the little guys still not getting in and a devalued regular season to boot. If we are going to hurt the regular season, we might as well get the postseason right.

Weekly update on the smoking crater at North Carolina
Marvin Austin is now off the team and no longer on scholarship. Probably the right move by the Tar Heels as he triggered the whole thing with his twitter account. Greg Little and Robert Quinn being permanently ineligible is a surprise, but they lied multiple times to the NCAA. Did they learn nothing from Dez Bryant at Oklahoma St. last year? Also of note, the agent gate portion of the North Carolina smoking crater is now complete. All of the other players still being held out or whom there has been no ruling about are part of the academic fraud case.

Longer piece on the agent story in Sports Illustrated coming next week. I recommend everyone go read the article on si.com even if there in nothing Earth-shattering in it other than the naming of names.
