After an ugly 11-9 start, we get to one of the worst weeks in recent memory for college football with College Gameday at a game involing an unranked team adn the Game of the Weeek being the Thursday game. Hopefully I show some improvement here.
Game of the Week - Miami vs Georgia Tech, 7:30 ET THUR ESPN, Chris Fowler, Jesse Palmer, Craig James
Last year Miami gave up 472 yards rushing and a ton of points in this game while yo-yoing quarterbacks on their way to an ugly loss. That won't happen this year. Georgia TEch's offense seemed a little out of sync last week against Clemson while Miami only has one quarterback remaining and he looks really good. Also, the Hurricanes are at home. Miami 34, Georgia Tech 28
Texas vs Texas Tech, 8:00 ET ABC, Brent Musberger and Kirk Herbstreit
Texas was caught napping looking ahead to this game in the first half last week before waking up and destroying Wyoming after halftime and with good reason. Texas Tech might be every bit as good as they were a year ago without the hype. The offense seems fine so far if it is, expect about 30 points from the Red Raiders here, close to what they scored in this game pretty much every year Mike Leach has been at the school except for 04-05 (the best Texas defenses in a long time). THough it will be a better game than most expect, Texas will win behind a near-perfect offensive showing and homefield advantage. Texas 51, Texas Tech 34
BYU vs Florida St., 7:00 ET Versus, Joe Beninati and Glenn Parker
Florida St. has better athletes, but they still have no real discipline or mental toughness. BYU has both of those (as they should since half the team is married and 24-25 years old because of missions). Florida St. isn't going to be able to handle this type of game on the road. BYU 27, Florida St. 21
Cincinnati @ Oregon St., 6:45 ET FSN, Rich Burk and Steve Preece
Cincinnati has looked dominant so far, but I still have questions about their rebuilt defense. Rutgers offense is going to be a work in progress for awhile and SE Missouri St. isn't exactly a test for a Big East team. Oregon St. will score lots of point behind the Rodgers borthers. It still won't be enough. Cincinnati is that good on offense. Cincinnati 44, Oregon St. 34
Virginia Tech vs Nebraska, 3:30 ET ABC Regional/ESPN2/ESPN GP, Sean McDonough and Matt Millen
Nebraska is untested so far, but I think the Blackshirt defense is going to crush the Hokies. Tyrod Taylor can't throw and no offense without the threat of throwing is doing anything of note against Nebraska this tear. Nebraska 20, Virginia Tech 10
Cal @ Minnesota, 12:00 ET ESPN, Dave Pasch, Bob Griese and Chris Spielman
Cal is the better team though they won't look it in the first half as the early kickoff get to them, again (just like MAryland last year). The difference this year is that Cal is better and they will wake up early in the second half instead of in the 4th quarter. Cal 34, Minnesota 24
Iowa vs Arizona, 3:30 ET ABC Regional/ESPN2, Mike Patrick and Craig James
I have big question marks about the Iowa offense and no such issues with the Arizona defense, especially after seeing Central Michigan score 29 at Michigan St. the week after scoring six at Arizona. Iowa, despite the blowout win over Iowa St., still has big issues. Last week was a mirage against a team that has much bigger issues. Arizona 23, Iowa 14
West Virginia @ Auburn, 7:45 ET ESPN2, Mark Jones and Bob Davie
Auburn's running game has been spectacular thus far while the West Virginia passing game has been very good. Meanwhile, both defenses have been relatively average thus far. I can't believe I'm saying this in a game involving Auburn, especially after last season, but expect a shootout. Auburn wins because of homefield but it will be close. Auburn 38, West VIrginia 34
Georgia @ Arkansas, 7:45 ET ESPN, Brad Nessler and Todd Blackledge
Georgia seems schizophrenic and also overrated thus far this season. Arkansas is supposed to be much improved. I don't expect the Georgia offense to be able to keep up with Arkansas as last week's 41 points were a bit of a mirage considering the Bulldog yardage total was more in line with about 28. 28 won't win this. Arkansas 35, Georgia 27
Florida vs Tennessee, 3:30 ET CBS, Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson
Florida is going to win, the only question is by how much. Expect it to not be as bad as expected. Tennessee is awful on offense, but the defense is good enough to keep the Gators under 50. Florida 45, Tennessee 7
