Commemorating 5th Down and the craziness of the 1990 season

Today is the anniversary of Colorado's 5th down win over Missouri. Here is the CNN report on the game.

This was the most absurd of what was a season where everything went completely crazy. Week to week, this season was even crazier than the 2007 season that produced a two-loss LSU as national champion ultimately producing a split national title between Colorado and Georgia Tech.

After the Jump, Week by Week through 1990 to explain how on Earth a Colorado team that had that plus a loss and a tie on its resume could possibly earn a share of the national title.

Despicable Nonsense

That title gives nothing away. Here is what I am annoyed about right now: Tuesday night football outside of the bowl season and Thanksgiving week.
Tonight, Middle Tennessee and Troy played the biggest game of the year in the Sun Belt on the bright lights of ESPN2. I understand why they did it - money and exposure, two things that drive every athletic director to approve things that shouldn't be approved, but this goes to far. It ridiculous. Why are there games on Tuesday? It disrupts everything just as Wednesday (though should be banned too), Thursday (at least there is a long tradition of those that fits in with the quirkiness of college football) and Friday (conflicts with high school games but at least less class time missed). If the NFL refuses to play on the day ever for any reason, college football should do th same because the NFL is all about money. If there was extra money to be made, the NFL would play on that day, so since they don't at any point during the season (as opposed to Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday), we can surmise there is nothing to be gained playing on Tuesday.

So why are these teams doing it? Because it is their only way on tv and they believe it will help the bottom line and recruiting. Here is the newsflash for Troy and Middle Tennessee. Your league just screwed up your schedule for no real reason and a few extra bucks that will be split amongst everyone. The only winner here is ESPN and you are beholden to them. Just play on Saturday's and go with life. Nobody cares about your games anyway. If they did, ESPN would pick it up and show it on a Saturday as they actually have to option to do each week (and have done with your league).

Needless to say, it annoys me even if I don't care about or cover the teams playing on this day. By the way, Troy won in a blowout.
