Coaches in need of a win, Week 9

These five coaches for one reason or another need wins and quick to cool their seats or at least make the natives a little less restless (this could be renamed profiles from the lunatic fringe this week).

5. Mack Brown, Texas – The Longhorns have been bad this season. In fact, they have been nowhere near the normal standards set by Mack Brown, but some of the lunatic fringe want him ousted for some reason. Brown needs a win over Baylor this week to calm the natives that are quite frankly stupid from multiplying in any way shape or form. That said, losing to Baylor would be an awful thing in a season when the Bears are currently ranked and the Longhorns are not.

4. Urban Meyer, Florida – Ditto Texas. Remember that part of the reason Steve Spurrier left in 2001 was a sense that 10-2 and an SEC Title wasn't good enough anymore. Meyer is now feeling that heat and while it might be his offensive coordinator who pays and not himself, losing to Georgia (something Florida coaches just haven't done since Spurrier got there) for a fourth straight loss overall would make for some angry fans.

3. Brian Kelly, Notre Dame – Obviously Kelly never got the memo from the Charlie Weis that losing to Navy as the Notre Dame coach might be the worst thing you can do. While there is no real hotseat and won't be until year three, the atmosphere around the program is starting to feel eerily reminiscent of the poisonousatmospheres that got Ty Willingham and Weis canned.

2. Mark Richt, Georgia – The Bulldogs have shown great strides in winning the last three. That said, those were considered to be easily winnable games before the season started. Florida wasn't but a win was expected anyway. Now, with Florida playing awful football, a loss would be unacceptable as it would be a loss to the worst Florida team since Zook and quite possibly the worst since before Spurrier. Not the impression that needs to be made on a new athletic director who came from Florida.

1. Paul Wulff, Washington St. - Wulff's team has played much better in recent week pushing UCLA and not quitting or getting completely embarrassed against Oregon or Stanford. With a home game against Jekyll and Hyde Cal and the Washington game still on the schedule, a win over Arizona St. this week make 4-8 possible and that or even 3-9 might get Wulff back for another season, improbable though that sounds. To have any chance at it though, winning is almost necessary and not getting blown off the field certainly is necessary.

Tim Brewster (Minnesota) and Todd Dodge (North Texas) have already been shown the door. Mike Locksley (New Mexico) is considered beyond reclamation.
