3 Most Important Results from Tonight
Marquette 79, Washington 77 – The Pac-12's early season nightmare got just a little bit worse the moment Jae Crowder's game winning three hit the bottom of the net with 6.3 seconds to go in the game. The loss was number three for Washington, who, with a weak Pac-12, might have to beat Duke Saturday to have any margin for error in Pac-12 play. As for Marquette, they are rolling early in the season in a way that suggests they are finally going to be firmly in the NCAA Tournament instead of spending life on the bubble in February before a late surge gets them in like the last few seasons.
Northern Iowa 80, Iowa 60 – More confirmation of really good basketball having returned to the Missouri Valley. UNI is one of three teams (along with Creighton and Wichita St.) that appear to have very good chances at the NCAA Tournament. On the other side, Iowa is just a terrible basketball team. Nothing more needs to be said about them until they beat someone they shouldn't and end up in the 'Worst Loss from Tonight' category some random night in January or February.
Memphis 72, Miami 57 – Despite the shiny national ranking, Memphis hasn't lived up to it. The Tigers have lost to Michigan and Georgetown and barely beat way down Tennessee. A win like this one on the road was needed to build some confidence in front of next Saturday's trip to Louisville.
Worst Loss from Tonight
Wofford 61, Tulane 50 – Tulane had started 9-0 against some awful competition (best win: Georgia Tech, one of the worst if not the worst team in the ACC). Then the Green Wave lost this game. NCAA Tournament teams from non-Power Conferences can't afford losses like this one. Heck, power conference teams can't afford losses like this one.
3 Biggest Games of Tomorrow
Florida vs Arizona – By far the biggest game tomorrow, Florida is coming off another road loss against top five opposition. The Gators are doing a ton of damage from 3-point land and should continue to shoot well at home. As for the rest, Arizona has some trouble scoring, meaning they won't be able to keep up if Florida's array of shooters gets hot.
Davidson vs Vanderbilt – Bob McKillop has his best team since Steph Curry left a few years ago, but he is still unlikely to get an at-large bid without some quality wins. This game is probably the most likely opportunity, especially with Festus Ezeli still out.
Dayton vs Alabama – Dayton rolled through the Old Spice Classic then fell on hard times immediately after, losing to Buffalo and Murray St. They need a win and need it quickly. As for Alabama, the Crimson Tide aren't necessarily in need of a win , but it would be to get one coming off a loss to protect future seeding.
