Lowlights Countdown Week 7

10. Pac-10 scheduling – So I rally might have enjoyed watching a Pac-10 game at some point this week and there was a very good one between Oregon St. and Washington. That said, four teams with a bye week in the middle of October is not a great idea for keeping the conference on the national radar. I understand UCLA and Oregon had to have the weekend off before playing a Thursday game, but the schedule should have been set so Stanford and Arizona St. were playing. There should never be less than eight teams playing in the conference on a given day. I don't want to turn Versus on to check the score of whatever is on and realize Washington St. is in a nationally televised game again.

9. Steve Spurrier in a close game – Go back three weeks. Close game against Auburn and Steve Spurrier changed quarterbacks. That didn't work out well. Then this week after Marcus Lattimore got hurt, the South Carolina offense grinded to a halt at Kentucky. The result was another close game and Spurrier mismanaging the clock with some odd play calling and odd timeout use (it wasn't Les Miles bad, but maybe it needs to be to win in the SEC this season) and an interception in the end zone after his team failed to execute.

8. Nevada on the islands – Nevada has never beaten Hawaii on the road and this season was no exception. The Warriors are much better than people thought they would be while Nevada might have been overrated considering the road woes of signature victory Cal (more on the Bears failures later. That said, the Wolfpack are probably happy to never have to make that trip again as they will be in the Mountain West before that trip has to happen again.

7. UNLV secondary – I was driving and listening to the UNLV game on the radio. Then I heard to halftime stats. Over 200 yards passing and 34 points at halftime against a true freshman. How bad are the Rebels? And by extension in my weekly mention of New Mexico (they had a bye this week), how bad are the Lobos to have lost to UNLV 45-10?

6. LSU passing game – 103 yards. That's it. Against McNeese St. They are awful. Of course they get the cure to their passing problems next week: Auburn's throwing against air secondary (more on them later too). If LSU can't throw against that, they won't throw on anything for the foreseeable future.

5. Ohio St. special teams – Way back in week two, Ohio St.'s special teams made this list for giving up two return touchdowns to keep Miami in the game. Evidently, the Buckeyes didn't learn anything. The worst result possible in a tough road game is to have the opening kickoff returned for a touchdown against you, especially by a team that has been truly awful on special teams all season.

4. Boise St.'s strength of schedule – The Broncos played San Jose St. Ouch for the computers this week. Oregon St. lost. Another ouch that will last all season. Nevada also lost and there goes the possibility of Nevada being ranked in the top 15 and being undefeated when Boise reaches that game at the end of November.

3. Why did Cal even bother? - Cal on the road is terrible. They are 3-0 at home and now 0-3 at home with only the Arizona game being competitive. While the Nevada debacle (52-31 defeat was bad), it was nothing compared to this. 42-0 at halftime. Even the USC teams of the middle of the last decade that killed nearly everyone shouldn't be doing that to Cal. That result is just embarrassing.

2. Defense in the Arkansas-Auburn game – Auburn made four plays on defense the whole game. Nothing more was needed because Arkansas made none. The ones that were made (knocking out the quarterback, fumble return and two interceptions) were huge, but it was ugly getting to that point as Arkansas backup quarterback Tyler Wilson threw for over 300 yards and four touchdowns. On the other side, the Auburn offense was unstoppable again. No shock there. It really may not have been a lack of defense in Arkansas's case, just better offense but it still looks bad on the stat line.

1. Florida offense – What was that. Mississippi St. only had 10 points and decided that Florida had no chance of scoring enough to win in the second half. One pass after halftime on the road? Really? Florida couldn't beat that. They have major issues on offense the likes of which we haven't seen out of Florida since the pre-Spurrier days (even Zook always had an offense, it made dumb mistakes all the time, but it moved the ball).

  1. This reminds me of Steve Harvey...

I am not sure there is a worse team than UNLV in the country...

Maybe they should shutter the "program."
