Off-field issues – Week 2

Welcome to week 2 of off-field issues where I examen what is happening off the field that might affect to goings on during play.

  1. John Blake resigns at North Carolina – For those who don't know who Blake is, he was thee defensive line coach and an ace recruiter who helped recruit much of the defensive talent and recruited much of Oklahoma's 2000 national title roster while he was the head coach there in the mid-90s. He has ties to one of the agents implicated in the Marvin Austin case that brought the NCAA to campus and his resignation is a sure sign that, at the very least, Austin is done for as a Tar Heel. North Carolina luckily has a bye this week to continue getting this whole thing figured out and it seems like with staggered suspensions, they will have at least a few more player available fro Georgia Tech on September 18.
  2. A.J. Green suspended four games at Georgia – Green made a stupid decision to sell his jersey, but the NCAA defining the person he sold to as an agent is incomprehensible. Green has paid his restitution and while he should get the equal suspension of Marcel Darius at Alabama (2 games meaning he is done either way this week), he should be able to play against Arkansas next week.
  3. Coaches on the hot seat – Some coaches seats got quite a bit warmer over the weekend. LSU's Les Miles in a win has major issues as the Tigers continued to not play up to its perceived talent level. Houston Nutt at Ole Miss lost to an FCS school, not good for job security, even in an expected rebuilding year. Mike Locksley at New Mexico has been a bad fit from the start and while his team wasn't expected to be even close at Oregon, a 72-0 humiliation where it was 59-0 at halftime might qualify as the worst case scenario.
