One more week of games before I blow everything up and get rid of the preseason bias that is clearly still in play here with some teams.
- Alabama (2-0) – looked like a number one team should at home against a game but still over matched opponent
- Ohio St. (2-0) – did exactly what they were supposed to do against Miami minus the special teams gaffes. That's now three special teams touchdowns against them in two game. Buckeyes need to tighten up that area
- Oklahoma (2-0) – Either Utah St. is really really good or week one was a case of looking ahead. Either way, the destruction of Florida St. was impressive
- Oregon (2-0) – 120 minutes played, 120 points scored. There is no way this pace keeps up but it sure it entertaining to watch
- Boise St. (1-0) – yes the Virginia Tech win hurts, but the drop here is as much because Ohio St. and Oklahoma were much more impressive against what now appears to be better competition while Oregon very well might score 40 on anyone right now and I don't think Boise could match that
- Texas (2-0) – An uneasy ranking here, the Longhorns appear to ripe for the picking if anyone can get an offense going. Cue Texas Tech Air Raid offense?
- TCU (2-0) – Wins over Tennessee Tech don't really help the cause. This weeks game against Baylor is trickier than it appears
- Nebraska (2-0) – Another week and another beating of an over matched team. Get back to me next week after the road trip to Washington
- Iowa (2-0) – Certainly look improved from last year when they had to claw and scratch for everything. Trip to Arizona Saturday night will be telling
- Florida (2-0) – The offense still stinks. The defense is still great. Wake me on October 2
- Wisconsin (2-0) – There are signs of concern with the passing game as Scott Tolzien continues to have ball security issues. If that continues, Arizona St. could scare the Badgers at Camp Randall but I doubt they can win with no offense (the Sun Devils fate in life)
- Utah (2-0) – Crushed UNLV like all top 20 teams should do. Next is New Mexico and another blow out win
- South Carolina (2-0) – Great job by Marcus Lattimore against Georgia but what's with the Hershel Walker and Adrian Peterson comparisons. Lattimore doesn't appear to have the breakaway speed either of those two guys had as freshman
- Arizona (2-0) – The best chance in awhile to break a long losing streak: The last Wildcat win over a non-conference BCS league team was against Nebraska in the 1998 Holiday Bowl
- Michigan (2-0) – Denard for Heisman is in full swing but there are questions on defense. Resume so far screams top 10, defense against Notre Dame scream get ready of 8-4 with lots of shootouts. Current ranking splits the difference
- Stanford (2-0) – The offense is fine post Gerhardt but the defense is the revelation (though that could very well have been a product of the inept UCLA offense)
- Auburn (2-0) – Cameron Newton has looked great but the defense won last Thursday's game at Mississippi St. That certainly looked like Tommy Tuberville would have wanted things to play out in 2008
- Texas Tech (2-0) – The Air Raid produced a little more balance against New Mexico. I wonder what happens when Texas stops the run. Does Tuberville let his offense throw 50 times against Texas or try to force a running game. It's the question of the season for the Red Raiders
- Kansas St. (2-0) – Patsy, ho hum. Wildcats probably near their ranking ceiling until Big 12 play really gets going
- LSU (2-0) – No I don't feel confident about having this team here and think they might be ripe for the picking, but they are one of only two teams (Michigan being the other) to beat a BCS-league team in both games so far
- Miami (1-1) – Normally I try not to punish teams all that much for losing road games to better opponents but the magnitude of the beating (that only looked good because of kick return touchdowns) was too great to not drop Miami at least a little bit
- Penn St. (1-1) – On the other hand, Penn St did exactly as everyone thought against Alabama. Nobody really gave them a chance and they didn't really make a game of it despite keeping the score semi-respectable
- Clemson (2-0) – Two cupcakes have moved the Tigers into the rankings (maybe as much because the Big East and ACC need more than one team ranked between the two of them as anything else) but a big test looms this week
- Air Force (2-0) – Finally snapped their long losing streak to BYU. Reward: a trip to Oklahoma. Oh boy here we go though the Falcons are good enough to win if the Sooners get caught napping again
- Cal (2-0) – As usual Cal has blown up two over matched opponents to start the year. You would think I and everyone else would learn not to rank these guys until they win something important in October
Others Considered
Arkansas (2-0) – Play some defense against a real team and you get ranked
USC (2-0) – I don't know what to say. With Kiffin's comments about the locker room being miserable after a 2-0 start, this team looks like an implosion candidate, but not this week
Oregon St. (0-1) – Probably just on a one week hiatus from the rankings as long as they do what good teams are supposed to do against Louisville
West Virginia (2-0) – Needed a miracle and overtime to beat Marshall. This is the best the Big East has to offer?
Georgia (1-1) – South Carolina may actually be good this season and Georgia didn't look terrible on defense. The offense will be fine once A.J. Green is back (whenever that is)
