College Football Low lights Countdown Week 3

10. Big East and ACC continue to take losses – Connecticut loses at Temple and Louisville loses at Oregon St. Cincinnati loses again West Virginia and Pittsburgh are the only hopes for the Big East and Pittsburgh is already carrying a loss to Utah. Alas, it gets worse this week. Pittsburgh is playing Miami and West Virginia is going to LSU. I don't expect the results for this league to change. In the ACC its no different. Clemson loses to Auburn and Maryland doesn't even show up until its way too late at West Virginia. Wake Forest and Duke show last weeks fun shootout was more a case of terrible defense than good offense. At least this league isn't likely to fall too much lower until rivalry weekend with the SEC where Clemson is the only one ever expected to win anyway.

9. Florida and Texas on offense – I get that there is inexperience at quarterback, but these teams are just terrible on offense. The Gators continue to think the first half is optional on offense while Texas is just waiting for the first team who can get the lead to fall apart at the seams.

8. Early season stats – Cal was ranked number one overall in total defense entering its game at Nevada. One over 500 yard and 50+ point eruption later and we can laugh at those rankings.

7. Michigan defense – Obviously, its not yet fixed.37 points against UMass after giving up over 500 yards of offense against Notre Dame is awful. The question of course is whether this will catch u to the Wolverines in Big Ten play again.

6. Short passes against Florida – Why do teams keep calling these? At best it doesn't go anywhere against Florida's speed and the Gators have a penchant for intercepting these passes and turning into points for the meager offense. Calling a short pass against his team is just stupid, especially since they are trying to jump routes so often that they can be had deep (as Tennessee proved twice).

5. Texas Tech offense – Obviously, the new Air Raid has some kinks to work out of the system after the worst Texas Tech offensive performance since 1990.

4. Bottom of the Mountain West – UNLV, Colorado St. and New Mexico might even be worse than putrid. None have been particularly competitive in any game (UNLV was closest in that regard staying in the game against Wisconsin into the 3rd quarter). For all of these teams, at least they have each other to try and get a win against.

3. Not blocking the inside man – The shortest path to the quarterback or kicker is straight ahead. That is why all blockers are taught to block the inside man first. Arizona St.'s field goal team forgot that and paid dearly for it against Wisconsin

2. Pac-10 Petulancy – Lane Kiffin continues to bafflingly go for two on a regular basis for no apparent reason. Jim Harbaugh used a timeout to ice the kicker before halftime in a 41-7 game and challenged a fumble up 61-24 in the 4th quarter. Even Jeff Tedford used three ice the kicker timeouts against Nevada before halftime. Come on guys. Lets keep the flow here and be graceful about it please.

1. Blowing coverage in the last minute – This happened a lot and cost some teams games of varying importance. The most important of these was the Georgia blow it against Ryan Mallett and Arkansas. Other than that, we had UAB complete a Hail Mary to win against Troy and Missouri complete an out route leading to a 68 yard score in the last minute to beat San Diego St. All these teams needed to do to win was keep closer watch on receivers and make a tackle. All failed and all lost.
