How did this happen? It seems every year, one bowl that is usually a yawner gets what looks like a great game. In 2003, it was the Fort Worth Bowl with Boise St. and TCU (sound familiar). In 2004, it was Boise St. and Louisville in a top-10 matchup in the Liberty Bowl. In 2005, the Peach (chik-fil-a), normally a good game, got a great game between top 10 Miami and LSU (at least it looked great on paper). Of course with non-BCS teams having better access into the BCS games, these matchups have dwindled, until this year. Boise St. enters the Poinsettia Bowl undefeated while TCU has two losses both on the road against top 10 teams going to the BCS.
Why Boise St. will win - The Boise defense has been awesome this season. The only team to do anything against them was the best offense they played: Oregon, and Oregon has scored a ton of points on everyone except USC. On offense, the running game has been good, and the passing game is very good. It's not the offense of the Fiesta Bowl team from two years ago, but it doesn't need to be. The defense is that good.
Why TCU will win - Boise St. hasn't seen a defense like this. The TCU defense is the one of the best in college football. Only Oklahoma with what might be the greatest offense ever in college football scored over 14, and that was a season low 35 points. Boise St.'s quarterback Kellen Moore is still a freshman. He isn't ready for this.
What to expect - Expect a hard-hitting defensive war. Boise St.s defense is very good and the offense decent. TCU's offense is slightly below Boise St.'s, but the defense is incredible. TCU slugs out a tough win.
TCU 17, Boise St. 13
Come back tomorrow for a review of last Saturday's Las Vegas Bowl, a game I was at.
